Bio

Hi there! My name is Michelle and I graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in Human Biology and a concentration in neuroscience and biomedical sciences. As an undergraduate, I conducted basic science research in a neurobiology lab, and interned at various biotechnology companies such as Genentech and Amgen. Thanks to the help of a nifty University Grant, I completed an honors thesis that aimed to restore memory and learning deficiencies in mice with cognitive impairments. During my senior year, I began my master's degree coursework in Community Health and Prevention Research. I was ecstatic to merge my passion for research and population health at the Stanford School of Medicine. I also wrote a master’s thesis on environmental and sociological factors of obesity among low-income youth in the Bay Area. As you can see, I have a diverse range of academic interests, but the common theme is rooted in scientific discovery and a passion for helping others. Feel free to reach out to discuss any or all of the above. I'm very excited to meet you!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Research paper investigating the biological, socio-economic, and environmental aspects of a disease of your choice

Conduct a rigorous literature review of a biology/chemistry topic of your choice (some examples include: molecular mechanisms of aging, role of stem cells in surgery etc) and write a research manuscript for publication. Formulate a thesis statement and cite published articles to craft a scientific narrative. Homework will include reading complex peer-reviewed articles and presenting relevant results and conclusions. Science is all about collaboration so being able to communicate your findings is a very valuable skill!

Community-needs assessment and implementation of evidence-based behavioral intervention

Conduct a needs-finding assessment to identify health disparities in your community or school. Use qualitative research methods such as focus groups, key informant interviews, PhotoVoice and write a proposal of actionable solutions. This project will be heavily focused on "field work" and gathering information from community members' lived experiences.

Teaching experience

Served as a upperclassmen mentor for Stanford Women in Medicine, a student organization that empowers women to pursue careers in STEM fields. I was also a Genentech College Ambassador where I mentored students on how to submit successful internship applications and hosted resume/cover letter workshops. I also conduct onboarding training for new hires at the Stanford Cancer Institute, teaching FDA-regulations for proper clinical trial conduct and institutional/departmental standard operating procedures.
