Expertise

Ancient Philosophy, Theology, Biblical Studies, Art & Faith, Church History

Bio

I like reading and understanding really old stuff, especially ancient philosophy and theology. My primary research project is writing a book about the cosmology (structure of the universe) in a first century Christian sermon known as "The Book of Hebrews." I also am interested in modern theological and philosophical issues, and really love analytic methodology. When I'm away from the books, I love practicing and performing magic tricks. I love teaching and I've produced lots of magic tutorials for my Youtube channel. I also enjoy film making, and have done animation projects, especially Lego stopmotion films. I also have written over 200 comics and like putting text and illustration into conversation.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Philo and Monotheism

Some have argued that "monotheism" as a category is anachronistic and problematic when used to describe Judaism and Christianity around the first century. Would a Jewish philosopher like Philo agree? Philo both says that Jews should respect the gods of other nations, but also refers to his God as the one God. For this project we would look at Philo in his historical setting, understand his views, and then communicate those in either a paper or through film.

God's Body?

Most modern people of faith (with some exceptions) think that God has no body. In contrast with this view, many ancient texts describe God's body. We would pick one of these texts and investigate how the author understood God's body and then write a graphic novel style essay explaining it.

Languages I know

Koine Greek, Classical Hebrew

Teaching experience

I taught public speaking to University freshmen for two years, which involved a lot of one-on-one mentoring helping them on their written work and speeches. I'm currently teaching University freshmen Koine Greek and supervising individual students to help them become better translators.
