Bio

Hello! My name is Soumya, and I'm a medical student in St. Louis, MO. My research interests typically lie at the intersection of public health and medicine. I am currently studying (a) the effect of mental health education for judges/lawyers on sentences for mentally ill defendants, (b) the utility of guided meditation for new moms at risk of postpartum depression and anxiety, and (c) how a school-wide book club may decrease medical student burnout. Outside of school and research, I love playing with my pup (a five-month-old cavapoo), going on bike rides and hikes, trying out new restaurants (especially Thai or sushi), reading, and watching live musical theater. Mentoring/teaching has always been a passion of mine, and I'm excited to see how we can bring the best out in each other!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Effect of a Medical-Legal Partnership on Patient Outcomes

This project would involve collecting de-identified data from the patients who have used the medical-legal partnership (MLP) that I founded at a free clinic in St. Louis City. The goal of an MLP is to provide comprehensive health care that addresses patients' medical and social needs at one institution. We will analyze the effect that MLP utilization has had on this patient population's reported quality of life, health status, and self-efficacy.

Teaching experience

As a high school student, I volunteered as a Science Alliance mentor, for which I was paired with a fifth-grade student to help him/her design a science fair project based on his/her own interests. These students then presented their work at a local competition, and I'm proud to say that my students consistently placed in the top three each year. I also used to work as a speech and debate instructor for middle school and high school students, which gave me the opportunity to design my own curriculum and offer constructive feedback.
