Bio
Hi, I'm Will, a Product Design Engineer at Formation Design Group in Palo Alto, CA. I work with Industrial Designers to translate sketches, prototypes, ideas, and feelings into tangible real-world products. My work focuses on marrying these soft ideas with emergent technology and market trends to create innovative, new products.Project ideas
Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.
Project 1
Learn how to design and 3D-model parts for various manufacturing processes (e.g. 3D-printing, CNC, sheet metal)
Project 2
Learn how to optimize a simple part against weight, cost, performance using Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Project 3
Design, build, and present a prototype of a new hardware product
Project 4
Create an engineering or industrial design portfolio
Coding skills
MatLab, C, Arduino, Processing, HTML, CSSTeaching experience
I've had a number of roles as a mentor/teacher since 2008: • mentored FIRST Lego League (robotics) teams in high school • teaching summer programs focused on product and toy design at Discovery World (interactive museum in Milwaukee, WI) • teaching assistant for graduate-level "Interactive Art & Engineering" at Georgia Tech • "Prototype Instructor" and founding member of the Georgia Tech Invention Studio, a makerspace dedicated to providing hands-on engineering/manufacturing education • professional mentor for engineering interns at Formation Design GroupCredentials
