Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Writing your own memoir

For this project, you would write your own memoir. We would think about the best ways to tell your story, thinking about audience, themes, pacing, tone, and more! To help us along, we would read some essentials on writing including chapters from Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird and Stephen King's On Writing (and, of course, The Elements of Style!). We would also read some famous memoirs and analyze the strategies authors use to get their stories across. This project aims to help young writers organize their best thoughts. I have experience with academic writing and fiction writing. I could help guide you in the sometimes mysterious world of publishing—working with you to identify the right literary agents and helping you pen an eye-catching query letter. I could also introduce you to some databases and useful sites related to publishing. This project does not involve me teaching you how to edit or write, but rather, working with you so that you become your own sharpest critic.

Create your own comic / graphic novel

Always had a story you wanted to tell? Didn't quite know how, but you just love reading comics? I'm the mentor for you if you love comics (or graphic novels, or bandes dessinées, or manga!). How about you make a comic of your own? I'll help you along the way, from understanding of how balloons and gutters and frames work to how much writing and drawing there should be.
