Bio

I'm originally from South Korea and I grew up in Oregon. I completed my undergraduate degree at Cornell University. I majored in Human Biology, Health & Society. Since graduation, I've worked in various fields of health. This included working as a research assistant at a cognitive neuroscience lab, working as a journalist writing about international health, and leading public health projects to address health disparity in Brooklyn, New York. I'm currently a graduate student in the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. My research interest is in global mental health, especially trauma in child and adolescent refugee populations. I'm currently studying the mental health effects of indirect exposure to trauma amongst North Korean refugees living in South Korea. If you are interested in global health, mental health, or child development, I'd be excited to work with you!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Barriers to Seeking Mental Health for Immigrant Families in the US

There are many barriers to seeking mental health in the United States. Such barriers may be greater for immigrant families in the US due to their unique challenges including cultural and language barriers. Students would learn important public health knowledge through research and conducting interviews. They would merge their understanding with a medium of their choice such as a documentary published on YouTube or a journalistic report.

Teaching experience

During college, I designed and taught nutrition, hygiene, and reproductive health to young students in Tibet. After graduation, I have worked for five years as a Tutor at a local learning institute in Portland, Oregon. I have experience teaching math, science, English, and Test Prep to mainly high school students. I have counseled many students in the college application process, who have had success getting into schools including University of Oregon, New York University, and Yale University. I have ample experience engaging in conversations with both the parents and children to help bridge any gaps in their communication and goals.
