Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Project 1

One possible project to work on is to learn about the Cosmic Microwave Background - a faint cosmic background radiation filling all space. It is an important source of information because it is the oldest electromagnetic radiation in the Universe.

Project 2

Another possible topic of interest is the Cosmic Web: Stars form galaxies, which in turn form galaxy groups, galaxy clusters, superclusters, sheets and filaments, creating a huge web-like structure sometimes called the "cosmic web". It contains information about the earliest stages of the Universe and is a very important tool for cosmology.

Project 3

Another thing I work on is N-body simulations, which are computer programmes simulating a box filled with billions of particles which interact gravitationally to form structures similar to what we observe in the real Universe. We use them to study the Universe by comparing simulations with observations.

Coding skills

python, some C++, java, matlab, mathematica, fortran
