A novel integrated device to assist the eldery and/or the visually and hearing impaired
Started Dec. 1, 2021
Abstract or project description
Currently, while walking around on a daily basis, the visually impaired rely on guide dogs to help with their movements and to ensure that they don't face any danger. However, an estimate for the average price of owning and training a guide dog was found to be ~$60k. Therefore, a cost efficient assistance method is required in order to allow for more people, particularly people who cannot afford the high price of a guide dog, to be able to use assistance mechanisms. In our project, we develop a smart cane that is outfitted with many different sensors to aid the elderly and/or the visually and hearing impaired in their daily life. The end goal of this product would be to develop a novel device that could in the future replace guide dogs in a cost efficient manner.
