What are the reasons for nuclear power’s poor reputation among non-experts, and how much of that reputation stems from misconceptions?

Abstract or project description
Nuclear power is by far the most controversial type of renewable energy. Compared to solar and wind, nuclear is often perceived as dangerous due to its morbid associations. While many diverse factors turn people away from supporting nuclear, such as the high power plants production cost, most anti-nuclear advocates are against it due to nuclear disasters, health and environmental concerns, and the potential for weapons proliferation. Although these fears are valid and reasonable, some aspects are misrepresented due to nuclear power’s controversial history. Through reviewing studies, surveys, and policies related to these arguments against nuclear, this paper will explain how they form. Additionally, by analyzing scientific studies, this paper will explain the aspects of each concern that are true, the aspects that are misinterpreted, and how they can be mitigated. These concerns are based on fact: nuclear disasters were incredibly widespread, there is a lack of permanent disposal for nuclear waste, and countries with less stability are investing in nuclear power. But, nuclear accidents are preventable, now that information on the poor infrastructure and management of plants such as Chernobyl is accessible. Solutions to nuclear waste and proliferation are currently being devised, by creating stronger methods to contain nuclear waste and nonproliferation policies. Although the concerns about nuclear power discussed in this paper are based on facts, they are misconstrued by nuclear power’s history.
