EFFECTS OF STEM CELL THERAPY FOR OCULAR DISEASES

Abstract or project description
Aiswharyaa is writing a review of the existing literature on treating Age Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy with cell therapy. Her research indicated that the use of stem cells to create RPE tissue (retinal pigment epithelium) that can then be transplanted into mice to reduce damage to the hosts RPE cells and other ocular tissues. She also found limited data indicating that these treatments could also increase visual acuity in subjects treated thusly. Additionally, she found information on stem cell therapy being used more indirectly as a vehicle for providing vesicles filled with cell growth promoting cytokines and proteins to damaged tissue. This will be an additional line of research that Aiswharyaa will pursue in her paper as a means of cell therapy.
