About

Hi! My name is Aidan Chandler and I'm interested in working with Polygence to gain hands-on research experience in an area that I am interested in. I was hoping to complete a project that has something to do with engineering, sustainability, and bamboo as I've found the topic interesting and with a lot of potential. After I complete the project I hope I will have some element of it that I can continue to work with, like making prototypes of a project or further optimization.

Projects

Project Portfolio

How does the weave pattern of bamboo in a bamboo composite material affect its material properties in comparison to carbon fiber composites?

Started June 5, 2023

Abstract or project description

The aim is to investigate and analyze how the weave pattern of bamboo in a bamboo composite material affects specific physical and mechanical properties, and subsequently compare these properties with those of carbon fiber composites. Bamboo composites will be made of intertwined bamboo strips, a resin, and a hardener and will have different patterns such as the till weave, plain weave, and other uncommon patterns. The composite will be created using the wet lay methodology placing a sheet of the woven material onto a flat surface and then applying the resin and hardener before the same process is repeated on top if multiple layers are used for the experiment. To maintain dimensional stability and consistency, the material will be fabricated and compressed between two uniform baking pans. Carbon fiber composites will also be made with the same methodology. Testing will be conducted with materials purchasable and test compression, torsion, tension, plastic and elastic deformation, and any other factor that can be renewable and accurately trialed at home. For example, placing a composite between two structures and measuring a force applied to the center at the point it snaps.
