Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Aircraft Design Toolbox

Conventional aircraft design is a well documented process, governed by mathematical models and equations which help us develop the flying vehicles we are accustomed to flying in. The next generation of vehicles will likely look different, utilizing innovative new technology such as electric propulsion and composite structures. In this project I propose to create a computational framework for conventional aircraft design based on current best-practices, and then write a scientific research paper on how this framework needs to be changed to accommodate for new technologies.

Building a UAV for Medical Transport

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become increasingly popular in the last decade, as companies and hobbyists alike are developing them for a myriad of applications. One such application is for medical supplies, providing rapid transport of emergency rescue supplies to areas that are hard to access. In this project I propose developing and building a UAV to pick up, carry, and deliver a medical kit. This requires an understanding of mechanics and how UAV components fit together, a basic understanding of coding and electronics, and interest in learning how to pilot a UAV.
