Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Superconductivity

Superconductivity, especially in high temperatures, is one of the big unanswered questions of condensed matter physics and materials science. In this project you will review the work done in superconductivity leading to BCS theory which describes the behaviour of the electrons in a superconductor. If time allows, we could look at some of the current research on high temperature superconductors. The goal of the project is to write a short history of superconductivity, referencing some of the major breakthroughs along the way.

Band Structure of Materials

A material's band structure tells us about its properties, for example whether it will be conducting or insulating. It is one of the most important pieces of information to a condensed matter physicist. In this project, you will develop a program to calculate the band structure of a material and derive information from it.

Rigid Body Dynamics

Rigid body dynamics studies how rigid objects behave as they are acted on by forces, such as collide with each other. This was one of the first things Pixar had to simulate when making Toy Story and it is actually an active field of research at Disney today. In this project, you will be introduced to the mathematical methods of rigid body dynamics and develop your own program to simulate balls bouncing off a plane.

Open Project

I am very interested to hear your thoughts so if you have ideas within condensed matter and physics programming I would love to hear them! Maybe we can come up with a project idea together that would perfectly suit your interests and future goals.
