4 Fall Programs for High School Students

5 minute read

Getting outside of the classroom is a key step for students to grow personally and academically. High school students typically view the summer as their primary window for venturing beyond their school communities. However, there are also programs running during the school year that bring groups of high schoolers together into hands-on learning and exploratory environments. These programs allow students to spend a handful of hours per week, usually after school or on weekends, gaining real-world experience in a professional setting, building valuable skills, and/or engaging meaningfully with their communities. This article will present a curated list of the top opportunities for motivated high school students interested in expanding their learning beyond the classroom during the fall semester.

Why Participate in Fall Programs as a High School Student?

Participating in enrichment and/or internship programs during the fall semester is somewhat different than participating in similar programs over the summer. The primary differences are that students have to balance their responsibilities with school courses, and program organizers have to plan around students’ academic coursework and school-related extracurriculars. This means that the programs are typically spread out over a longer period of time. For example, students may have program commitments one to two days a week after school or during the weekends, instead of in chunks of five days at a time for multiple weeks in a row, as with most summer programs. That difference could be a big plus for students who have busy summers, who want to integrate their enrichment program into their existing routines, or who prefer to have flexibility in between sessions to reflect and work on their own time.

As with many summer programs, all of the fall programs listed below allow you to explore careers and build your resume of skills through hands-on workshops, individual mentorship, and networking opportunities, helping you stand out for positive college admissions results.

How to Choose the Right Program for You

When selecting a fall program to apply for and enroll in, it’s important to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. How well does the program’s structure, content, and curriculum align with my personal interests and academic/professional goals? Whichever program you choose, make sure that it is a rewarding use of your time and energy.

  2. Is the program in-person, virtual, or hybrid? If it takes place in person, is it practical for me to get to the meeting location when necessary?

  3. Does the length and/or cost of the program make sense for me and my existing commitments? Some programs are more flexible than others in the event that participants need to miss one or two days, whereas others only offer financial aid on the condition of near-perfect attendance.

  4. Do I meet the eligibility requirements, and do I have time to submit a strong application before the deadline? If both answers are not yes, then you’ll be better off applying somewhere else.

How to Maximize Your Experience in Fall Programs

Congratulations on getting matched with an exciting fall program! Now, how will you make the absolute most out of the upcoming experience? Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Before the program starts, write down a list of your goals. What are you hoping to get out of the program? What skills would you like to build? What would you like to have accomplished by the end of it?

  2. During the program, use an app or other task management system to keep track of your work and responsibilities. You’ll need to manage your program-related work and school-related work all at the same time, so it is crucial to stay organized and to avoid procrastination.

  3. Make friends and participate in all discussions. It may seem overwhelming, scary, and sometimes tiring to go from a familiar school environment into an unfamiliar group. The sooner you get into the habit of introducing yourself and raising your hand to participate in discussions, the easier it will be in the long run.

  4. After completing the program, read back through your goals. Did you accomplish what you set out to? Did you build the skills you were hoping to develop? Take the time to reflect on how well the program actually met your interests and expectations.
