What is DECA?
DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America. It’s a nonprofit student organization dedicated to preparing young people for careers in business and related fields. The organization has over 262,000 members worldwide, creating a network of ambitious students, passionate educators, and supportive business partners.
Thanks to DECA, students can participate in competitive events designed to test their skills, knowledge of key business concepts, and, perhaps most importantly, their creativity.
Similarly, in the Academic Decathlon, students participate in a range of events testing their knowledge across various academic departments. An honor student can excel in both, as both DECA and the Academic Decathlon team focus on building diverse skills.
As an organization, DECA aims to develop students’ competencies in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. If you want to become an expert in business operations, enhance your leadership abilities, and sharpen your problem-solving skills, DECA is the way to do it.
DECA isn't just about competition; it’s about preparing you to excel in the real world.
Understanding DECA Competitions
While DECA does more for participating students than provide them with the opportunity to compete, the reality is that this is the bait that lures most students in. The competitions are truly the heart and soul of the organization.
DECA competitions let students showcase their talents and learn from top industry experts, all while gaining invaluable experiences. The events are meant to challenge you at the deepest level yet also provide you with a rewarding experience that leaves you itching for more.
There are several different levels of DECA competitions, each with its own set of challenges and events. From district and state conferences to the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), there’s no shortage of opportunities for students to shine. Each of these individual events is carefully curated to test students’ skills in all different aspects of business.
The result? Students who are well-rounded and ready to take on any challenge.
What Are the Ways to Compete in DECA Competitions?
As mentioned earlier, DECA competitions are diverse and cater to different interests and skill sets.
District, State, and International DECA Competitions
The path to DECA's success starts at the district level, also known as the regional competition. Here, you’ll compete against participants from your local area, sometimes those from right within your own school. If you perform well, you’ll advance to the state finals conference. The competition gets tougher, and the stakes get higher.
At the state competition, the ultimate goal is to qualify for the International Career Development Conference, where you’ll compete against the best of the best from every corner of the world.
Each level offers a unique experience, helping you learn and grow as you progress through the competition.
What Do High School Students Do in DECA?
Let’s get one thing clear—DECA isn’t just any old after-school club. It’s a gateway to real-world business. DECA students participate in a variety of activities to prepare them for competitions, even when they aren’t actively competing in those student events.
You’ll hone your skills by conducting weekly case studies and attending workshops that spell out the latest in marketing communications. You’ll spend time networking with your peers and with industry professionals.
Although the accolades are certainly the icing on the cake, participating in DECA isn’t just about winning trophies. It’s about building essential skills that will serve you for a lifetime.
From leadership and teamwork to public speaking and time management, DECA equips high school students with the skills they need to shine in the business world. So don’t be surprised if you find yourself leading team decisions and giving professionals like a pro!

How to Excel in DECA Competitions
Now that you’re familiar with the different event clusters you might participate in let’s talk a little more about how to stand out in those clusters. It’s not about glitz and glamor - instead, it’s about impressing judges with the right mix of preparation, presentation, and management.
How Do You Stand Out at DECA?
First and foremost, preparation is key—no matter what DECA competition you’re participating in. Start by thoroughly understanding the DECA competitive event guidelines and scoring rubrics. We recommend going through them with a notepad and a highlighter. Mark anything you don’t quite understand and ask questions about anything that’s unclear.
Practice your material with a weekly case study and by going through past competition scenarios. Most importantly, take the time to collaborate with your fellow team members to brainstorm ideas and develop strategies.
Also, take the time to hone your presentation skills. At the end of the day, these can make or break your performance. Work closely on your public speaking abilities and practice delivering your pitch clearly and confidently. Use visual aids and props to enhance your presentation and make it more engaging.
Last but not least, remember that time management is vital during competitions. Practice working within the time limits and make sure you allocate enough time for each section of your presentation. Practice the material in full, going through each section at your natural speaking pace, to ensure you have enough time to cover all the necessary material.
Work on staying calm under pressure - again, practice makes perfect - and don’t forget to leave time for a rock-solid conclusion.

Understanding DECA’s Scoring Rubrics and Guidelines
An often-ignored piece of DECA competition preparation is the scoring rubrics and guidelines. This is one of the easiest - yet most important - things you can do to prepare yourself for competition. After all, if you don’t know what’s expected of you, how can you possibly perform well?
Go through the scoring rubrics and guidelines, again taking notes and asking questions about anything you don’t understand. Familiarize yourself with the criteria the judges use to evaluate your performance, paying special attention to areas like problem-solving, creativity, and feasibility.
Then, tailor your preparation to meet these criteria and make sure you address all aspects of the grading rubric.
Generally, DECA judges use their professional and personal expertise to evaluate candidates, considering performance indicators, written components, and even first impressions. Scoring can change at any time, so it’s important to cover all your bases as you’re preparing for the events.
Does DECA Look Good on College Applications?
You bet! DECA is one of the best ways to help your college applications rise to the top of the pile, even if you’re not planning on majoring in anything business-related.
Aside from showcasing your entrepreneurial expertise, participating in DECA competitions showcases your commitment to leadership, personal development, and extracurricular activities. It can bolster your academic profile by showcasing your achievements, especially if you highlight your accomplishments (like placing in an event or excelling in individual series events) in your application.
Don’t forget, too, that colleges value leadership and teamwork skills. DECA is the perfect place to let these shine. Whether you led a team decision-making event or organized a DECA chapter strategy guide, these experiences only highlight your ability to work collaboratively and take initiative.
