- Research Program Mentor

PhD candidate at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Expertise

AI/ML/NLP; statistics; computational social science; data science

Bio

I'm a PhD student at the University of Michigan's School of Information. My research interests lie broadly under "computational social science"; I use primarily quantitative methodology (e.g. data science, NLP) to explore questions related to intersections of AI/algorithms, ethics, social computing, and social justice. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, I completed my undergraduate training in Computer Science and Applied Statistics at the College of William & Mary. While at William & Mary, I performed research with the Social Networks and Political Psychology (SNaPP) Lab and served as PR Chair for our campus's ACM-W chapter. Additionally, over summers, I completed software development internships. My hobbies shift over time; recently, in my free time, I enjoy learning languages, practicing piano or singing, and weightlifting.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

How Do We Talk About Him vs. Her?: A Computational Analysis of the Language Redditors Use in Reference to Men vs. Women

In this project, we are interested in determining if there is a difference in language with which social media users discuss men vs. women. If there is a difference, as previous literature would suggest, then we are also interested in characterizing and describing this difference. To complete this project, we will leverage natural language processing techniques to examine language on a popular social media website. This project will involve data collection, analysis, and visualization.

Teaching experience

As a Graduate Student Instructor and/or a Teaching Assistant, I have taught Computer Science and Data Science courses ranging from major-requirement introductory courses to senior-level capstone project courses. My experience is primarily with undergraduate students, but I have also taught and tutored high school students in these subjects.

Reviews

"I am very grateful to have had Hayden as a mentor--Hayden is a great mentor and provided a lot of support during our project. I had not done a project before in this area, so I was a bit nervous about the learning curve, but Hayden's patience, encouragement, and knowledgeable advice made the process more fun and facilitated my learning, while also giving me the freedom to discover things on my own. Overall, Hayden is supportive, encouraging, knowledgeable, and helpful."
