Bio

Hi! I am Zhenya. I am a historian of religion and cultural change in Ukraine and Russia. I hold a Ph.D. degree in history from Yale University. My dissertation investigated how the Western European Reformation and its ideals took hold first in Ukraine and then in Russia. I research how it changed the way these societies approached books and knowledge. Since little research was done in this area before me, my dissertation got an outstanding dissertation award in the genre of European history! I got to work with texts written six hundred years ago and understand the people behind ancient books. I can help you interpret sources, ask the right questions, and craft your own historical narrative. I can also guide you in finding an appropriate methodology for your research. I am also a native Ukrainian speaker as I was born in Ukraine. And if you are interested in the contemporary history of Ukraine, Ukrainian literature, films, or culture, I am happy to help!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

The Corporate World of Early Modern Europe: What Was IT?

Guild statues provide valuable information on the corporate culture of early modern Europe. These sources shed light on the life of pre-industrial entrepreneurs. How did premodern people understand competition and fair business practices? Where was the divide between public and private? And how did their ideas shape the legal and urban culture of early modern Europe? The project aims to answer the questions through the analysis of primary sources in the context of the social, political, and religious circumstances of early modern Europe.
