Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research and Passion Project Ideas For Students Who Don’t Want to Code

5 minute read

Embarking on the journey to learn about Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) does not need to be confined to the realm of coding wizards. For students who harbor a curiosity for AI but shy away from programming languages, there exists a vibrant world of projects that transcend coding complexities. In this realm, students can harness the power of AI to engage in exciting projects that spark innovation, without the need to decipher intricate lines of code.

AI/ML Projects That High School Students Can Do That Don’t Require Coding

Let's delve into a universe where AI becomes a collaborator for your ideas, fueling projects that are as diverse as they are accessible.

AI-powered art

You don't have to be a coding whiz to delve into the world of AI-powered art. AI platforms like DeepDream and Runway ML empower artists to create unique digital art with just a few clicks. These tools harness the power of AI algorithms to generate stunning visuals, transforming your creative ideas into tangible masterpieces. For art enthusiasts, this presents an accessible avenue to explore AI's potential, where you can experiment, iterate, and let your creativity flow without the need for coding expertise. Additionally, artistic style transfer applications allow you to infuse your photos with the distinctive styles of renowned artists like Van Gogh or Picasso, adding an exciting dimension to your creative endeavors.

These are a few artists and content creators who use AI-based tools to create stunning visuals in the architecture, interior design, and fantasy art space:

AI in music composition

Music has the power to transcend boundaries, and AI can be a gateway to new musical horizons without the need for coding skills. AI-generated music tools like AIVA (the AI tool composing emotional soundtrack music) and Google's Magenta Studio offer intuitive interfaces that allow you to compose melodies and harmonies effortlessly. These platforms leverage AI algorithms to create original musical compositions, enabling you to explore uncharted musical territories.

Whether you're a budding composer or simply someone who appreciates music, AI empowers you to experiment, create, and appreciate the fusion of technology and artistry in a coding-free environment. Additionally, you can delve into music-related AI projects, such as training models to recognize different music genres, using user-friendly platforms like Teachable Machine, making music analysis accessible to non-coders.

AI/ML for research and analysis

Students inclined towards research and analysis can leverage AI as a powerful tool. Data analysis is a prime example where AI simplifies complex tasks for non-coders. Tools like Tableau and Power BI offer user-friendly interfaces for data visualization and interpretation. These applications enable you to uncover data patterns, draw insights, and present your findings without getting bogged down in coding intricacies.

Furthermore, AI-powered research assistance tools can be invaluable for literature reviews, summarizing research papers, or identifying trends in extensive datasets. With these AI applications, you can streamline your research efforts, making them more efficient and effective, even if you don't possess coding expertise.

AI in image and video editing

Photography and video editing enthusiasts can harness AI to enhance their projects. AI-enhanced photo editing tools provide an accessible avenue to transform your photos into captivating works of art. These user-friendly applications enable you to retouch images, remove backgrounds, and apply artistic effects with ease, even if you're not a coder. Furthermore, AI can automatically generate captions for videos, making your content more accessible and engaging to a broader audience. This feature bridges communication gaps, ensuring that your visual content effectively conveys its message, all without the need for extensive coding knowledge.

In essence, AI empowers non-coders to elevate their visual storytelling and editing skills. This skill set could be immensely useful for students interested in animation, arts, or storytelling projects.

AI in language translation

Language enthusiasts can explore AI's role in bridging linguistic barriers. AI translation tools like Google Translate provide a seamless way to practice and enhance your language skills. Whether you're learning a new language or improving your proficiency in an existing one, AI-powered translation tools facilitate cross-lingual communication without the need for coding. Additionally, you can venture into projects involving multilingual chatbots. These chatbots can communicate fluently in multiple languages, offering interactive language learning experiences. This non-coding approach to language exploration makes learning languages more engaging and accessible for students who want to broaden their linguistic horizons.

An interesting research project in this realm is to utilize these tools to explore the intricate relationship between language and thought, particularly focusing on how different languages shape our conceptualization of abstract concepts like space and time. This BBC Future article, 'The weird way language affects our sense of time and space' highlights studies revealing how speakers of different languages conceptualize time, with examples like English and Hebrew aligning time direction with reading and writing orientation. However, bilingual speakers, particularly those fluent in Mandarin and English, exhibit intriguing variations in their mental time mapping. The article also delves into the impact of language on economic behaviors, such as saving habits, and explores how linguistic differences extend into spatial orientation and action-focused descriptions. The overarching theme suggests that language profoundly influences cognition, offering diverse perspectives on the world.

AI in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)

Immersive experiences in the realms of VR and AR beckon those interested in creating interactive and engaging content. AI-enhanced VR environments are accessible to non-coders, thanks to AI algorithms that simplify the creation of dynamic and interactive VR experiences. With these tools, you can design captivating virtual worlds, engage users, and convey your narratives without delving into coding intricacies. For example, take a look at this brilliant tool my colleagues at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have created. It’s called Virtual Interaction with Physics Enhanced Reality (VIPER). Nuclear engineers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory have combined AR and radiation transport simulations to revolutionize radiological training. Using augmented reality goggles, the technology could benefit multiple sectors from space exploration to nuclear energy to emergency response. “We are transforming the way a nuclear worker can see radiation,” Smith said.  “We take something that is invisible and make it visible.”
