ADHD and Anxiety in Children: A Multivariable Analysis of National Survey Data

Abstract or project description

This project examines the relationship between ADHD and anxiety in adolescents using data from the National Survey of Children’s Health. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels, while anxiety involves persistent worry, fear, and emotional distress. Both conditions are common during adolescence, a developmental period marked by rapid brain changes in areas responsible for attention, decision-making, and emotion regulation. During this stage, adolescents face increased academic demands, social pressures, and greater independence, all of which can influence mental health. Adolescent mental health is also shaped by environmental and social factors such as family support, school expectations, peer relationships, participation in organized activities, and access to resources. Previous research has shown that ADHD and anxiety often co-occur, suggesting a meaningful association between the two; however, large-scale analyses are still needed to better understand this relationship in adolescents and how it may vary across different subgroups.
