Abstract or project description

Stress and anxiety have become prevalent mental health issues affecting many adolescents in recent decades. Many pre-teens and teens are stressed, yet they lack awareness of effective strategies to manage it. Youth stress matters because it can disrupt brain development, emotional regulation, and overall growth. Additionally, when stress isn’t dealt with healthily, the risk of anxiety increases. The purpose of this study is to educate pre-teens and teens specifically on why stress occurs, how it affects the brain, and ways to manage stress healthily. This paper will discuss the neuroscience behind stress and anxiety, their demographics, mental health factors, and interventions. Stress and anxiety affect many critical regions of the brain. When stress/anxiety occurs, it is harder for the brain to regulate emotions, leading to fear and overactive systems. Adolescents are exposed to stress in their everyday lives, mainly due to inadequate sleep, insufficient physical activity, and excessive social media usage. A significant amount of the youth population has chronic stress, and this has significantly increased due to COVID-19. Anxiety can be reduced through many approaches, such as maintaining healthy personal relationships and implementing social media regulations at the policy level. This research will help teenagers learn to better deal with the realities of stress and anxiety, giving them the appropriate tools to live healthy and satisfying lives.
