Eligibility and Application Process

Eligibility

To be eligible for the UC Santa Barbara Research Mentorship Program, high school students must be in the 10th or 11th grade, with a few spots going to very advanced 9th graders. Students must have a 3.8 weighted GPA minimum and be able to attend the 6-7 week program in its entirety (for reference, the dates of the  2023 program were June 20th through August 4th).

Application components

The application for this competitive program is rigorous. Along with a complete and up-to-date high school transcript, students must submit a 500 word personal statement and a three page writing sample to showcase their writing ability. Students also must answer three short essay questions and submit contact information for one recommender. If they’ve taken AP courses, there is also an option to submit these scores. The application fee is $75.

Selection

Admissions offers are made on a rolling basis and students can expect to receive their admissions decision three to five weeks after they receive an email confirmation that they’ve completed all components of the application

Program cost

Students can participate in this program as commuters or as residential students. All students pay $4,700 program tuition and fees, and residential students pay an additional $6,599 in housing and meal fees.

Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships are available, with priority given to California residents. Students should note that their guardians will have to submit the W2 forms and Federal tax returns in order to be considered for these scholarships.

All students enroll in two interdisciplinary research courses which will earn them a total of eight credit hours. The second course is an introduction to research, which helps students develop writing techniques specific to communicating research findings.
