Abstract or project description
Street dancing is a physically demanding and increasingly popular form of movement. While dancers often experience important health benefits, street dance styles such as breaking, waacking, locking, and popping are also associated with physical risk. This project will look at both the benefits and risks of street dancing by conducting a literature review, by reading and summarizing published scientific studies, exposing gaps in research, and making recommendations. Street dances can improve flexibility but can also lead to injuries, including sprains, strains, tendinitis, and bone fractures. We will collect and review articles that describe how different dance styles affect the body, focusing on musculoskeletal health and other possible outcomes. After reviewing this research, we will compare the benefits and risks, discuss differences across dance styles and dancer groups (age, gender, etc.) and highlight areas where more research is needed. The results of this project will be written up for a student research journal to help raise awareness and share practical tips for dancers and coaches.
