Implementing Pre-and Post-Incarceration Addiction Treatment

Started Nov. 2, 2023

Abstract or project description

Drug use and addiction is primary contributor to individual criminal behavior, and is known to increase the likelihood, severity, and repeatability of arrestable acts. Addressing addiction has been historically challenging, but jails in well-resourced cities are likely one of the best conduits for providing treatment options to individuals most at risk and in need. A new state or local law requiring provision of appropriate medication to temporarily incarcerated individuals and staffing/training of appropriate personnel to administer this medication is the best way to create wide spread positive change to both urban safety and crime-related expenditures. By providing appropriate medication to inmates with substance use disorder, correctional institutions can help decrease mortality and recidivism rates, leading to both social and economical benefits.
