Abstract or project description
For my project, I will write a review paper exploring the effectiveness of music-based interventions/music therapy in improving behavioral symptoms, cognitive development and emotional well being in children with ASD. This is an important area of study as it may contribute to efforts to improve functioning in children with autism that improves their overall quality of life. To date, many studies, including randomized control trials (RCTs), systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, suggest that music-based interventions can improve social communication and reduce behavioral symptoms in children with autism. While the observed benefits of music therapy make it a promising tool for improving behavior in autistic children, RCTs with long-term follow-ups are needed in order to prove whether or not treatment benefits persist, diminish, or grow after the intervention ends. In addition, some functional improvements may only become apparent after time, especially as the children face new developmental challenges. Additionally, the current body of research on the neurological impact of music on ASD is limited. Future research should focus on conducting larger RCTs with more sophisticated designs. Clinically, music therapy is a promising alternative to standard treatments that can also be included into multidisciplinary ASD programs as well.
