The influence of music on athletic performance in adolescents

Started Dec. 8, 2025

Abstract or project description

This paper aims to investigate how listening to music during exercise affects both the motor performance and psychological state of adolescents, addressing a gap in the current literature. It synthesizes existing research, including meta-analytic reviews and studies on adolescent athletes, to examine music's influence on performance metrics such as power, strength, and endurance. The paper also explores the psychological impact, focusing on perceived exertion, and mood with an emphasis on factors such as music tempo, preferred genre, and volume. Key findings from the reviewed studies suggest that preferred music can improve strength and reduce perceived exertion, although the effect on some anaerobic performance measures may be non-significant, leading to recommendations for future research to clarify optimal timing (before or during activity).
