Using CRISPR and CAR-T to improve cancer therapy

Abstract or project description

Sri is is very interested in next generation treatments for cancer. Treatments like chemotherapy and conventional immunotherapy are sometimes effective, but have limited effectiveness for many applications and also, especially for chemotherapy, come with severe side effects. More targeted kinds of therapies might be able to improve efficacy and/or decrease side effects. CAR-T therapy is one kind of new approach that shows lots of promise for targeted cancer therapy. Furthermore, preliminary studies in animal models and human clinical trials have highlighted what the key limitations/challenges are for making CAR-T therapies maximally effective. Sri will be looking into these challenges, and into cutting edge research that aims to use CRISPR-Cas9 to help CAR-T cells overcome those key challenges.
