About
Hi, my name is Sophia Karandikar and my project explores idealistic acoustical environments in comparison to the facilities at my high school. I chose to work on this project after taking years of band classes and having a love music. I'm a prospective engineering student and want to explore acoustics as a branch of physics, and want to know more about the science and the aspects of sound people often overlook.Projects

Evaluating acoustics in the context of spaces designed for musical performance and rehearsal
Started Apr. 24, 2026
Abstract or project description
Spaces all over the world use the science of acoustics to maximize their use. May it be concert halls, rehearsal rooms, theaters, or sports stadiums, the science of balancing the aspects of sound and cultivating its power is imperative to the use of space in a world where communication is done through the medium of sound. This project aims to conduct research on what an ideal acoustic space looks like, and how spaces designed with acoustics as a priority compare with what science deems idealistic. I will be writing a paper comparing aspects of my school's concert band room to resources defining optimal acoustic standards, and possibly those of more professional spaces such as those at top preforming universities. If time allows, I plan to develop a system online to collect these metrics.
