About

Hello! My name is Shreya Sreejith and my project is on the connection between the Gut Brain Axis and Neurodegenerative Diseases. I chose to work on this project because I love to learn about the brain and I find the gut microbiome very fascinating. After my project is complete, I would like to publish it in a journal.

Abstract or project description

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) are prevalent neurodegenerative disorders with significant impacts on patients and healthcare systems worldwide. Affecting millions annually, these diseases lack definitive cures, and their diagnosis remains challenging due to overlapping symptoms and complex pathology. Emerging research on the gut-brain axis (GBA) reveals its critical role in linking gut microbiota imbalances with neurodegenerative diseases.. Alterations in gut microbiota diversity are implicated in neurodegenerative processes such as neuroinflammation, amyloid-beta deposition, tau pathology, and α-synuclein aggregation. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding gut-brain interactions for early diagnosis and helpful treatments. The intersection of PD and AD research with GBA science highlights potential non-invasive strategies like dietary interventions, such as the Mediterranean Diet, to balance gut microbiota and mitigate disease progression. This body of work advances our understanding of the GBA’s significance and its therapeutic implications in combating neurodegenerative diseases.
