Abstract or project description
Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy is a type of immunotherapy that functions by targeting specific antigens on tumors. Six CAR T cell therapies for blood cancers have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2017, and now research moves forward to focus on solid tumors. Solid tumors require much more endurance from T cells due to their complexity, leading to additional barriers not faced in blood cancers. Many limitations surround CAR T cell therapy in solid tumors, including severe adverse events and the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Recent research advancements have focused on logic gates, CAR T cells in combination with other therapies, and better targeting tumor cells as solutions to these limitations.
