AI as Defender or Threat: Navigating Cybersecurity in the Healthcare Industry

Started Feb. 24, 2025

Abstract or project description

Samuel is researching the growing threat of cyberattacks on the healthcare industry, with a focus on understanding the motivations behind these attacks and their economic and human consequences. His project examines real-world case studies—such as the 2017 WannaCry ransomware attack and the 2024 Change Healthcare breach—to illustrate the vulnerabilities within healthcare systems and the damage that can result when those systems are compromised. He explores the role of Artificial Intelligence both as a potential weapon used by cybercriminals and as a tool for defense, emphasizing how AI could shape the future of cybersecurity. Samuel’s research aims to raise awareness about the increasing severity of cyberterrorism in healthcare and offers forward-looking recommendations for prevention, preparedness, and AI-powered defense strategies. His final paper will serve as both an analysis of current vulnerabilities and a warning about the escalating risks if proactive measures are not taken.
