Bots Across Borders: Analyzing AI Deployment Across Hospital Wealth Levels

Started May 19, 2023

Abstract or project description

Investigating the question, "What are the similarities and differences between the challenges and opportunities in expanding AI healthcare technologies to hospitals in higher-income versus lower-income countries, considering productivity measures, frontline perspectives, knowledge gaps, workforce capabilities, and transparency requirements?" The research employs a literature review style approach to convey the complex range of factors opposing the integration of AI in hospitals of lower-income countries compared to challenges to integration in higher-income countries. The study argues that despite potential limitations to AI use related to the socio-economic status of these institutions, such as staff and patient distrust in AI, data bias and gaps, and cost of implementation and training, the benefits of increased efficiency appear to outweigh the resolvable negatives associated with AI integration. In conclusion, the research posits that AI in lower-income countries' hospitals culminates in cost-efficiency and expedited medical processes, among other positives, that, with solutions outlined in the study like methods of increased staff informational AI training and feasible options of increased data transparency, will outpace challenges to AI implementation in lower-income countries’ medical facilities.
