Cricket's Function As A Cultural And Social Language For the South Asian Diaspora
Started June 23, 2026
Abstract or project description
Rohan is working on a research paper rooted in sociology and cultural studies on the function of cricket with U.S. South American diasporic groups. Taking Stuart Hall's definition of cultural identity as always in flux, this research looks at how people from all different backgrounds -- a group of people who are loosely connected to the heterogenous south Asian Indian subcontinent - are able to bond over this sport. However, cricket has different functions for different groups of people. For Rohan, for example, cricket is a fun pastime, for a group of first generation players, it may augment their well-being much more. Pierre Boudieu, for instance, talks about diasporic fatigue and its connection to the political economy of being. Using language as a metaphor, (why, by the way, did you use language as a metaphor).
