Improving Disease Diagnosis from X-ray Imaging

Abstract or project description

X-ray imaging is widely used in medicine to diagnose patient's conditions so that appropriate treatment can be undertaken. In recognition of the importance of data-driven approaches to healthcare, the National Institutes of Health has released a dataset of X-ray images and their associated diagnoses (https://nihcc.app.box.com/v/ChestXray-NIHCC). We plan to apply machine learning techniques to this dataset to create a model that can identify the potential presence of various diseases given an X-ray image. Ideally, we will improve over the state-of-the-art in terms of metrics such as (balanced) classification accuracy and F1 score.
