About

Hello! My name is Rhea and my Polygence project is on the role of inflammation in allergic responses and cancer. I chose to work on this project because the double-edged nature of inflammation always intrigued me and made me curious to research more.

Abstract or project description

Natural selection has driven evolution since life first arose on Earth, and many pathogens survive by attacking other living creatures. The human body has evolved many defense mechanisms over thousands of years to address this issue. These range from broad to highly targeted, and some must be carefully regulated. Inflammation is the human body's protective response to harmful stimuli, injury and other challenges to homeostasis. Inflammatory responses are triggered by allergies but observed in both the progression and prevention of cancer. In allergic and cancerous settings, inflammation can be beneficial and/or harmful. This contradictory role is due to subtle differences in the inflammatory responses involved in the specific setting. This research paper explores the mediators and impact of inflammation in both allergies and cancer on a cellular and molecular level. By building a more nuanced view of the multifaceted nature of inflammation across biological contexts, researchers may be able to obtain new insights about ways to address complicated diseases.
