How do the toxins of different species in the Conus genus compare in viability for the pharmaceutical industry?

Started May 25, 2023

Abstract or project description

Species in the genus Conus have been heavily studied in the pharmaceutical industry, but certain species have proven more useful than others. The drug Ziconotide has been derived from the venom of Conus magus and drugs using similar toxins from other Conus species have seen success in clinical trials. In the research paper I will be comparing the venoms of various Conus species and discussing trends seen in species that have proven to be pharmaceutically beneficial. If identified, such trends can help researchers assess which species would be more beneficial to study for potential pharmaceutical benefit. This will be done with publicly available data about the protein components of the venom and phylogeny of the species within the genus Conus.
