How would I build a robot that can do a simple task without much prior knowledge.

Abstract or project description

I want to build a robot that will use an arm to bring trash from one place and into a trash can. With a little bit of programming knowledge, mechanical knowledge, and design knowledge, I want to, from scratch, build an entire robot, experimenting along the way. Although I will fail at a lot of things, and have to learn a lot more things, I will be able to build my fundamentals up while teaching students about my project along the way. Not only will my project have some theoretical impact on the world, but along the way I will be impacting my community and learning new things along the way.
