Hi! My name is Meredith. My Polygence project is testing how long it take music to change people's emotions. I chose to work on this project because music has always been essential to me as it affects my mood depending on what I listen to. Since many people have busy schedules I want to discover how many minutes do we have to listen to upbeat music to save time and also see a change in emotions. This could apply to our daily lives, medical fields and businesses.

How long does it take music to change people’s emotions?

Started Apr. 16, 2022

Abstract or project description

Meredith is going to be conducting a psychology experiment to be published with the Journal of Emerging Investigators. She aims to answer the question: How long does music take to change people’s emotions? Her hypothesis is that 10 min of upbeat music is sufficient to improve emotions. She will modulate the length of time a person listens to music and will give a survey to determine emotions. She will then analyze the data and write up a manuscript on this project.

We discovered that it doesn’t matter how long you listen to music because emotions change regardless of the length of listening. Negative emotions were decreased each session. Relaxation had a significant change only after 10 or 15 minutes but not 5 minutes, this means that the longer you listen the more relaxed you can become. These data can influence decision-making in the medical and business field, as well as in our daily lives. We now know how much time is needed to change someone’s emotions by listening to upbeat music.
