How does the female athlete triad impact the risk of injury in adolescent female figure skaters?

Started Oct. 19, 2023

Abstract or project description

The Female Athlete Triad is an interrelationship between menstrual dysfunction, low energy availability, and decreased bone mineral density in females ages 10-19¹. This results from a combination of factors, including intense training demands, pressure to maintain a certain body weight, and insufficient caloric intake². These factors often affect athletes participating in sports that emphasize leanness and put them at risk for stress fractures and other bone-related problems that can hinder their performance and abilities³. This especially affects young figure skaters due to the sport’s promotion of leanness as a competitive advantage, putting them at a greater risk for injuries associated with the Female Athlete Triad. This review will address the impact of the Female Athlete Triad on female figure skaters and explore how to mitigate injury risks, improving the athletes’ long-term health, career longevity, and overall success in performance.
