Abstract or project description
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of death globally and remains the deadliest infectious disease, according to the World Health Organization. The bacterium causing this disease, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, enters through the airways and maintains a stronghold in the lungs. There are antibiotics that treat this disease, but the problem of drug resistance is causing patients to catch multi-drug resistant (MDR-TB) and extensively drug resistant strains (XDR-TB) of this bacteria. Due to the problem of drug resistance, bacteriophage therapy using phage cocktails is being researched instead of the classical antibiotic approach. Phage therapy is an exciting prospect, but a lack of case studies make it hard to research on this topic.
