About

Hello! My name is Kenneth Huynh and my Polygence project is on (or hopefully on) Huntington's Disease, a devastating neurodegenerative genetic disorder. I chose to work on this project because I am curious and wanting to help the research on potential cures/treatments. After my project, I would like to get an internship at a lab in areas around me!

Abstract or project description

Roughly 30,000 Americans suffer from the debilitating hereditary illness known as Huntington's Disease (HD). It includes difficulties with the body, mind, and spirit, and there are several kinds, based on the timing of when symptoms appear. The Huntington gene mutation at the root of the disease causes a series of harmful occurrences. Over time, physical symptoms such as stiff muscles and choreatic motions get worse. Executive functioning and memory are hampered by cognitive decline. Physiological effects include mood swings, anxiety, and depression. are examples of psychological effects. Although a permanent solution is still unattainable, treatments such as Tetrabenazine which target motor problems, while occupational and physical therapy to improve functioning, and psychological assistance to promotes emotional health. With assistive technologies, independence can be restored. For people afflicted with HD, ongoing research provides hope for better therapies.
