How does long-term sleep-deprivation impact the risk and progression of Alzheimer's Disease?
Started June 23, 2021
Abstract or project description
Although no definite cause of Alzheimer's Disease has been identified, one feature of the neurodegenerative disease is the accumulation of amyloid plaques, an effect also associated with sleep-deprivation. Similarly, the aggregation of amyloid beta contributes to sleep-wake disturbances, which in turn accelerates neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's patients. Here, we review the correlation between poor sleep quality and AD as well as the long term effect of chronic sleep-deprivation on cognitive functions in Alzheimer's patients.
