Beyond the Myth: A Qualitative Exploration of Internalized Barriers and Empowerment Strategies for Asian American Career Women

RQ: What strategies do Asian American career women use to navigate internal barriers such as imposter syndrome, the model minority myth, and the clashing of cultural values? How can culturally-aligned organizations amplify these efforts and foster more confidence and emotional security in Asian American women who aspire to achieve higher leadership roles?
This paper will explore how Asian American career women navigate internal barriers such as imposter syndrome, the model minority myth, and cultural value clashes (e.g., humility vs. dominance). Through a literature review of relevant published papers and a case study of an exemplary networking group for Asian American career women, this paper will seek to define and investigate the invisible barriers that Asian American women in leadership face as well as pinpoint strategies that these women use to overcome these challenges. A key focus in this paper will be the role of culturally-aligned organizations—such as mentorship programs or coaching groups—in providing emotional support and amplifying confidence. By specifically centering the voices of Asian American women in higher leadership, this study will aim to highlight not just the obstacles they face, but also the resilience and community-driven solutions that help them succeed. Ultimately, this paper seeks to provide actionable insights for societal change and provide more dimension to the narrative surrounding Asian American women in the workforce.
