Abstract or project description

This project examines the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and oral health outcomes. ASD is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges in social communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. Individuals with ASD often face sensory sensitivities, behavioral challenges, and communication barriers that may hinder effective oral hygiene practices and limit access to dental care services. As a result, they experience higher rates of oral health conditions, including gingivitis, periodontal disease, and dental caries, compared to neurotypical individuals. These disparities are influenced by behavioral, caregiver, provider, and systemic factors. This paper aims to promote greater awareness of ASD-related oral health challenges and improve understanding within dental care settings.
