About

Hello! My name is Jermaine. My research is about creating algorithms to assist firefighters in the decision-making process.  I chose to work on this project after seeing thousands of devastating wildfires destroying millions of acres of land in California. When my project is complete, I’d like to continue my path in machine learning to solve the firefighting challenge. It’s my goal that one day AI could recommend resource points and firefighting strategies given the geographical constraints and environmental variables, and deploy robots to assist firefighters to put out fires. I love coding, competitive math, and building robots. In my free time, I like to exercise and hang out with my friends.

Optimization of Firefighting Resource Positions with Linear Programming

Started May 9, 2022

Abstract or project description

Due to rising outbreaks of fires across the world from climate change, firefighters require efficient ways to allocate resources over a geographic region to reduce planning time and logistical costs. We use linear programming to estimate the optimal locations to dispatch firefighting resources around a fire given the environmental parameters and the relative positions of the resources. Our algorithm learns the model parameters of the linear program after training on past environmental data and historical firefighting resource locations.
