About

Hello, my name is Jennah Yoo, and I’m currently a high school senior residing in Seoul, South Korea. I‘m an all-about-science student: my academic interests lie in the field of social science with a focus on gender and feminist studies. My forte is definitely writing; I love to write in any form and style, but my favorite medium is poetry. Some of my hobbies include watercolor painting, running, and playing soccer. I like to perceive myself as an energetic and enthusiastic learner-- I love to learn anything and everything that I don’t have in store! Last but not least, my favorite food is the infamous “double-trouble”: a scoop of mint-chocolate blast accompanied by a scoop of strawberry-flavored deliciousness!

Comparative History of the Representation of Gender in U.S. and South Korean Television Commercials: “Can a commercial really be more progressive than its time, or is it merely not as regressive in comparison?”

Abstract or project description

Jennah has designed, and taken a precocious lead in the execution of, an ambitious project cataloguing television commercials from the U.S. and South Korea. The earliest examples are from the 1930s. The main category of analysis is the portrayal of gender roles in these commercials. Jennah plans to present findings in an interactive website, featuring a timeline of commercials and original commentary. Translations of Korean commercials into English are also currently planned.
