About
Hello! My name is Ian and I am researching the short-term and long-term effects of concussions and other traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) on the physical and mental wellbeing of high school student athletes. My goal is to write a well-polished research paper with the hopes of getting it peer reviewed, and advocate for more research on this topic.Projects

Abstract or project description
High school athletes are a population that are at a heightened risk for concussion. However, current research and resources remain disproportionately focused on collegiate and professional athletes. Because of the ongoing development of the brain during adolescence, especially decision making regions such as the prefrontal cortex, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of traumatic brain injuries. This paper examines the cognitive and developmental effects of concussions in high school athletes, and emphasizes topics including disparities in access to care (particularly in rural and underfunded schools), gender based differences in symptoms and recovery, and the cumulative consequences of subconcussive impacts that can potentially lead to long term effects. Emerging research into exosomal biomarkers offers promise for noninvasive and objective diagnosis, but current applications remain largely focused on adult populations. By synthesizing findings from peer reviewed literature and recent advancements in diagnostic tools, this study identifies gaps in adolescent concussion management and explores strategies for improving prevention, assessment, and recovery protocols in high school settings.
