Automatic discovery of quantum circuits using gradient descent

Abstract or project description
As of recent, quantum computers are becoming more advanced and more powerful, allowing humans to run more complex calculations than with classical computers. In order to run these calculations, quantum computers compile programs into quantum circuits which perform sequential manipulations on sets of qubits. These circuits can be quite deep for long-running programs, and they can be prone to noise and error. Techniques from machine learning can be leveraged to automatically discover high-fidelity approximate quantum circuits which have significantly fewer layers, saving on physical resources.
