Exploiting the Human Gut Microbiome for Novel Therapeutics

Abstract or project description

Many bacteria live healthily in our bodies providing us with necessary protection against pathogens and diseases. To exploit these compounds further, we need to first identify these compounds and make them in a large quantity that can be used for treatment. These compounds can be identified through computational genome mining approaches with the publicly available genome sequences of identified bacteria. Ethan will review the therapeutic compounds that have been discovered from the human microbiota, and how they can or have been used in treatments. He will also look at where this field will be going in the future.
