The Rapidly Evolving Nature of Parasocial Relationships on Social Media Platforms: Moderators on Mental Health

Started July 19, 2023

Abstract or project description

This review explores the evolving nature and impact of Parasocial Relationships (PSRs) on mental health, comparing traditional and One-and-a-Half-Way (OHW) PSRs. The study delves into how these relationships, ranging from bonds with TV characters to online content creators, have transformed with digital media's rise. Specifically, the study critically examines how factors such as the quality of real-life relationships, attachment anxiety, sexual orientation, sense of community, strength of the parasocial relationship, and frequency of interaction moderate PSRs' impact on mental health, and how these effects may change depending on the form of parasocial engagement. The paper also addresses ethical considerations and potential harms, underscoring the need for further research to navigate the psychological landscapes of digital media consumption and its implications for mental health.
