Effects of Cosmetic Ingredients and Conditions on Various Skin Types

Started Dec. 31, 2024

Abstract or project description

For my research project, I will be answering the question: "How do environments and skincare products affect different skin types?" Understanding skin types is the first step in finding the right products and routines. There are five main skin types: normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive. Normal skin has balanced moisture and oil levels with small pores and few blemishes. Oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to larger pores and a higher chance of breakouts and shine. Dry skin lacks moisture, often feeling tight, flaky, and rough. Combination skin is oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) but dry elsewhere. Sensitive skin is prone to irritation, redness, and reactions to certain products or environmental factors. Maintaining healthy skin involves protecting the moisture barrier to retain hydration, preventing damage, and regulating oil production to avoid clogged pores and acne.

Environmental factors and skincare products can significantly affect how my skin behaves. High humidity tends to make my skin feel oilier, while low humidity can leave it dry and tight. Cold weather strips moisture from the skin, while heat increases sweating and oiliness. Pollution can clog pores and accelerate aging by causing oxidative stress. UV exposure damages the skin’s structure, leading to pigmentation and premature aging. To see how different products work for various skin types, I’ll be conducting an experiment using oil absorption sheets to measure moisture levels at different temperatures (outside, in the fridge, and at room temperature). This will help me understand how well certain products benefit each skin type. Once my research is complete, I plan to build a website where users can take a quiz to figure out their skin type and get tailored product recommendations.
